Editorial: FIRST Robotics competition thrills community

The stories keep coming. The blessing of the playing field by Fr. John at the FIRST Robotics competition opening ceremonies last week end at BHS was well-received by the crowd. It’s never been done at a competition before.
The presentation of the colors by young men who stood at strict attention for a half hour also brought praise.
The ride in a golf cart for a grandmother and two grandchildren from where she had to park “in the dirt” away from the main parking area to the door was another unexpected pleasure. The details of the very, very organized event continue to bring praise. These were volunteers who knew what they were doing.
“It took a lot of hours to make it happen,” said School Supt. Pete Kudlak at the end of Monday’s school board meeting. He said BHS has offered to host the competition again next year.
Supt. Kudlak said he heard lots of praise for Belleville’s beautiful school building and how big it was. One student was surprised at the stairs to the second level, stating, “You’d think they would have escalators.”
The BHS culinary students from the Ford Career Center laid out special meals in the hospitality center. No one will deny it was a high-energy, high-stakes event with lots of positive energy. And, none of the mentors involved want to take credit. It was a team effort, they say. The community thanks you all.
