State Representative Bill LaVoy, D-Monroe, has introduced a bill to help counteract the latest round of vehicle registration fee increases for Michigan’s senior citizens. Rep. LaVoy’s district includes Sumpter Township.
The bipartisan legislation, House Bill 5939, would exempt those aged 65 or older from having to pay the increased fees as a result of the controversial road funding package that was passed last winter.
“I don’t think it is fair that our taxpaying seniors, many of whom are on fixed incomes, will need to figure out how they are going to find the additional income to register their vehicles,” LaVoy said.
“If the current leadership in this state truly cared about senior citizens, they would take this issue up before the fee increase takes effect next year.”
Rep. LaVoy’s bill has been referred to the House Committee on Appropriations where it is awaiting a hearing.
“I encourage those who support this bill to contact their legislators in the House and Senate to voice their support. Senior citizens have paid taxes their whole lives and we should be able to provide them a little extra relief on this,” LaVoy said. “Your voice could make the difference.”
