The city of Belleville has finally sold three old police cars – and it sold them all to the same bidder: Karen Kubit, who lives on West Wabash Street in the city.
At Monday’s meeting of the city council, sealed bids were opened by Clerk/Treasurer Lisa Long for three police cars up for sale.
Kubit bid $1,000 for the 2000 Ford Crown Victoria and she was the only bidder.
She bid $1,200 for the 2001 Ford Crown Victoria and she was the only bidder.
There were five bids for the 2008 Dodge Charger, ranging from $1,161 to $3,100, and Kubit was the high bidder.
The council voted unanimously to sell all the cars to Kubit.
In other business at Monday’s meeting, the council:
• Put off action for two weeks so the Motor City Canoe Rental could get an illustration of the Belleville Lake Outpost it wants to put in Horizon Park to house the canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards it wants to rent to the public beginning in May. At issue is the equipment rack and shed to be built next to the Veterans’ Memorial — who will build and maintain it, and whether the shed will be taken down in the winter or left in place year around. The details are expected to be worked out by the April 18 meeting so the council can vote on it;
• Approved the VFW/PLAV request to sell Buddy Poppies at Five Points on May 5, 6, and 7 to earn money for worthy veterans’ causes in the community. VFW Vice-Commander Cornell Anton said the groups have three new members and they will be out dodging traffic to help sell the poppies, the groups’ biggest fund raiser of the year;
• Approved the request for the Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce and Egan’s Pub to put up a beer tent on the Fourth Street Square for Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19, of Strawberry Festival, with Councilwoman Kim Tindall voting no. Tindall explained she was representing the people in the city who don’t want alcohol in the city parks. Jennifer Winter of Egan’s said the tent will be a Strawberry Bar serving strawberry beer, strawberry wine, and special cocktails. She said the sides of the tent will be up and people can bring in food from wherever they buy it at the festival to eat under cover. They hope to make enough money to cover their half of the tent cost;
• Took no action on a request from the Kona Strawberry Run to put up a beer tent on the Fourth Street Square on Friday, June 17, of Strawberry Festival. Nobody was present from Kona to discuss the request;
• Approved accounts payable of $139,327.34 and the following departmental purchases in excess of $500: to Blue Ribbon, $1,260 for water main break, and $2,940 for sewer repair, both from water fund; to Concentra, $5,145.50 for medical exams from fire department fund; and to Wayne County Department of Environment, $1,930.60 for 2016 assessment for Alliance of Downriver Watersheds from water fund; and
• Praised the work of Keith Tackett, who is leaving as DPW Director this week. “He came when we were in transition,” said Mayor Kerreen Conley, referring to the retirement of Keith Boc. “We have really appreciated everything he has done for us and his truly being a part of the community.” Tackett replied, “It was really my pleasure.”
