Van Buren Township Trustee Regina Miller has completed the Michigan Townships Association’s intensive Township Governance Academy.
“Prior to enrolling in the program at the beginning of my term, I felt a bit overwhelmed at times in getting certain information I needed and unsure of where I could turn,” Miller said.
“Since attending and graduating from the program, I have developed a network of resources that are now available and within reach.”
TGA is a voluntary credentialing program intended to provide township board members and other local leaders with cutting-edge knowledge and expanded skills needed to assist in making more effective decisions for the benefit of their township.
The Academy, which challenges candidates to tie together learning and practical experience, consists of 11 courses and includes a requirement for elective credits.
Created and administered by the Michigan Township Association Knowledge Center, this program is designed to professionally challenge township officials by offering new ideas, sharing best practices and providing a hands-on approach to dealing more effectively with everyday issues that the board may face.
Miller began serving as trustee in 2012. Since then, she’s served as the board liaison for both the Senior Endowment Committee and the Elections Committee, and she’s an active member of the Southwest Democratic Club. Previously, Miller served as the vice chair of the Public Safety Committee, executive director of the National Strawberry Festival and vice president of the Belleville Downtown Development Authority, and she has volunteered for two homeowners associations.
In 2015, Miller received a $12,000 scholarship from Michigan State University’s Michigan Political Leadership Program and graduated March 3 from the multi-partisan progressive leadership program on effective governance.
