Two Van Buren Township police officers were having coffee at Starbuck’s at about 6:47 a.m. Saturday, when they noticed smoke coming from a home on Dewitt Road, not far away.
Police knocked on doors and checked with neighbors on whether anyone was in the house and were assured no one was there because the owner’s car was gone.
Fire fighters from Van Buren Township aided by the city of Belleville put out the fire in the home of Larry Bodenmiller, who was not home at the time. Fire fighters waited outside on the lawn and rehydrated, above, about four hours later as a team sprayed water up through a ventilation hole in the roof.
Bodenmiller later said he had noticed some electrical interruptions over the past few days.
