Jeremy Michael Jamula, 34, of Sumpter Township, was found guilty by a Wayne County Circuit Court jury of one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct – Third Degree with multiple variables and on Nov. 18 was sentenced to 6-15 years in prison by Circuit Court Judge Vonda R. Evans.
Jamula had been charged with four counts of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree; one count of kidnapping; four counts of criminal sexual conduct, third degree; and one count of aggravated assault. There reportedly was a hung jury on the nine other counts.
The incident occurred on Nov. 15, 2012 at Jamula’s home in Sumpter Township.
The victim, who now is 22, testified to what happened that night and how Jamula picked her up at her home in Rockwood and they planned to smoke pot together. But Jamula said the pot was at his house and so he drove her there and had her come inside while he got the pot.
At Jamula’s preliminary exam at 34th District Court, the victim testified how Jamula raped her, beat on her, forced her to give him oral sex, and yanked out pieces of her hair over a five-and-a-half-hour period and then took her into the shower and scrubbed her down with a washcloth.
The victim described how he had thrown her cellphone against the wall and how she was allowed to put it back together and call for a ride. She called her mother first, who hung up on her, and then her father twice and he met her at the closed party store near where Jamula had dropped her off in Sumpter Township.
She testified that her father asked if he should bring a gun and she told him he should.
She said she was afraid to contact police because of outstanding warrants because of her battle with drug addiction, but her father called police. Her interview by Sumpter Township Detective John Toth is recorded.
Defense attorney James W. Murray said the defendant is a college graduate and lives with his parents and his father works for the government.
“It doesn’t make a difference if a person is college educated,” Judge Tina Brooks Green stated at Jamula’s preliminary exam.
Jamula also was sentenced to two years in prison on Nov. 12 in Monroe County for a nolo contendere plea to a March 15, 2013 charge of unlawful use of a vehicle.
He currently is in the Kinross Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula with an earliest release date of Sept. 15, 2021.
