On Sept. 9 at approximately 4:30 p.m. there was a serious vehicular accident in the area of Ecorse and Haggerty roads. Van Buren Township Detective/Lt. Kenneth Floro reports a vehicle broadside collision involving a semi-truck.
The semi-truck was traveling westbound on Ecorse Road approaching Haggerty Road. It struck a Ford Edge that was attempting to turn left on Ecorse Road from a private drive.
The Van Buren Township Public Safety Department and Huron Valley Ambulance were called to the scene.
The driver of the Ford Edge, a 38-year-old male from Flat Rock identified as James Kaufman III, had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Van Buren Township Fire Department and was air-lifted to U of M Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The driver of the semi-truck, a 33-year-old male from Clinton Township, did not have any injuries from the accident.
The Van Buren Township Accident Investigation Team was called to the incident and completed the on-scene investigation, collecting data and securing physical evidence.
