As of Oct. 1, Pastor William and Martha Hill of Sumpter Township have been married for 67 years.
His wife Martha would like everyone to know that William Hill was a professional baseball player. He played for the Negro League and signed with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1955.
“He was a pioneer for the black baseball players of today,” she said.
Bill Hill was Rookie of the Year in 1955. He also played in the East/West All-Star games. He signed with the minor league club of the Philadelphia Phillies, a major league club, in 1956. He was on his way to the majors, but he hurt his arm.
“When Pastor Hill moved to Sumpter Township, he started a basketball clinic on Saturdays for the kids out here and we had over 100 kids every Saturday,” she said. He also coached Little League baseball for Van Buren.
“We ask for your prayers for Pastor Hill and his wife,” she said.
