A food trailer called Waters Kitchen has been approved as a temporary land use in the parking lot in front of Menards for the next year.
At the regular Zoom meeting of the Van Buren Township Planning Commission on July 22, Carolyn Gregory of Superior Township explained her food trailer will be there from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. – be open when Menards is – and she will take the trailer home at night to clean it, stating that she has OCD – obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Her request to the township said she will offer catfish, ribs, wings, French fries, mac and cheese, baked beans, chicken, and water, pop, and slushies.
Gregory said she grew up in Sumpter Township and attended Belleville High School. She is under contract with Menards and is paying them $600 a month to be there.
She said she will be having six-foot distancing and masks. There will be no seating and people can take their food home to eat.
Building and Planning Director Dan Power said she will occupy six parking spaces and complement the sales at Menards. The kitchen is self-contained and needs no electrical hook up or electrical inspections and no water hook up.
“I do not want anyone sick, or me sick,” she said. She explained customers will come to the window, place an order, and wait in their car or stand and wait until they are served.
She thanked the township staff for helping her get through the paperwork to get approved, “… so I can go make people happy.” She said she wanted to start as soon as possible.
A report from the VBT Fire Marshal Dave McInally said she needs fire-suppression system inspections twice a year and she already had one and can have the other one next spring.
Commissioner Donald Boynton asked if VBT shouldn’t be named on her insurance policy and Director Power said he would look into that. She said Menards is named.
