A large crab apple tree growing in the patio of the current Belleville Area District Library will be destroyed in order to build the parking lot for the new library.
At its regular meeting on Aug. 13, library board members said they have consulted two arborists about saving the tree which has a “glorious” bloom each spring. They will try cuttings and seeds, but it was warned the seeds might not come out the same as the original tree.
Board president Sharon Peters said an attempt to dig up and move the tree would be expensive and they are told they probably would lose the tree, anyway.
Library Director Mary Jo Suchy said she had a hope of having tree seedlings to give away to each child at the grand opening of the new library.
