A 19-year-old male from Romulus, identified as Kenneth Payne III, was a passenger in a vehicle that hit several trees on Monday afternoon. He had been ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At about 1:21 p.m. on April 25, the Van Buren Township Public Safety Department and Huron Valley Ambulance were dispatched to the area of Ecorse Road between the Washtenaw County line and Denton Road, concerning a reported one-vehicle accident.
Van Buren Police Lt. Kenneth Floro said the preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz was traveling eastbound on Ecorse Road just east of the county line when it left the roadway and collided with several trees.
The Van Buren Fire Department and HVA arrived on the scene to provide emergency medical care for all the people involved in this collision, Lt. Floro said.
The first responding units discovered one person ejected and unresponsive. Another person was responsive and in need of care.
The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old female from Romulus, was treated at the scene and transported to University of Michigan Mott Hospital in Ann Arbor where she was listed in serious condition, Lt. Floro said.
The Van Buren Township Accident Investigation Team was called to the scene to conduct a follow up investigation, collect data, and secure physical evidence.
