A vehicle being pursued eastbound on Ecorse Road by Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department came into Van Buren Township on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 1.
Van Buren Township Deputy Police Chief Jason Monte said Washtenaw cut off the high-speed pursuit near Denton Road, but the vehicle kept speeding eastbound. A Van Buren Township officer at Beck Road said the vehicle was going about 100 mph and going too fast to pursue.
The vehicle kept going and at the Belleville Road intersection it slammed into multiple vehicles and then the driver jumped out and fled on foot.
The driver left two young children in the car, ages around 2 and 5, but family members quickly showed up on the scene to take the children into their care.
Deputy Chief Monte said there were no fatalities, no serious injuries, and the children are OK. He said the driver got away.
The intersection was closed to traffic for some time to allow Van Buren Township emergency crews to clean up the accident, Monte said.
