Whitney Beaubien of the Van Buren Public Schools Education Foundation announced to the VBPS Board of Education at its April 26 meeting that the foundation has given grants totaling $23,000 to teachers in the district who applied. Most grants are around $500 each, she said.
Grants are to purchase education equipment that can be used and reused, said board president Amy Pearce.
Beaubien said the foundation has planned a 5K Splash & Dash fund raiser for June 26 during Belleville Lake Fest.
Usually the winners of the grants attend a school board meeting to accept their grants, but this year because of the pandemic, the grants simply were announced. Aleisa Pitt, principal of Tyler Elementary School, said the grants were delivered in person to the teachers instead, along with a bright balloon.
