Due to dry ground conditions across Southeastern Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources has upgraded the wildfire risk for this area to “VERY HIGH,” according to a Nixel alert sent out March 11 by Sumpter Police.
Sumpter residents were urged to avoid outside burning of any kind.
The Sumpter Township Fire Department had responded for mutual aid to several wildland field fires in surrounding communities over the past week and five within the township over just the past two days, the alert stated. Wildland fires usually spread very rapidly, with the potential to threaten nearby houses and other structures before fire suppression activities can begin.
“Please be aware, those whose negligent activity leads to wildland fire and subsequent property destruction can be held liable, both criminally and civilly,” the alert stated.
Residents are instructed to avoid outside burning of any kind.
