On Feb. 5, the Wayne County Commission voted 14-0 to approve a five-year intergovernmental agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation for improvements to Sheldon Road, between Van Born and Yost roads, in Van Buren Township.
The project, which is expected to begin in April, will be overseen by the state.
Of the nearly $912,640 budgeted for the project, the county will pay $167,527. The remainder is being paid with federal money. The township is not responsible for contributing.
Sheldon will be repaved with asphalt, and there also will be drainage improvements.
“I am very pleased that Wayne County and the state are working together to improve this stretch of Sheldon Road,” said Commissioner Abdul “Al” Haidous (D-Wayne), whose 11th District includes Van Buren Township. “It is very important that different levels of government work together for the greater good.”
The Commission’s Committee on Public Services, on which Haidous serves, voted 5-0 Jan. 28 to send the matter to the full Commission for final approval.

Seriously repairing a road with little traffic takes priority to a road that is traveled by soooooomany where are our brains. Beck Road between Tyler and the Service Dr. is in desperate need of paving, but we sink money into a lightly traveled road over one with a school and other major attractions. Get it together Wayne County I am tired of dodging the potholes ALL year on Beck Road.
