On Tuesday, April 28, the Van Buren Township Senior Center will host a “Pop & Drop” food bank for senior citizens within the township.
Residents who are at higher risk of going into stores, can drive up, pop their trunk and staff will drop the food in. The drive-through food pantry will operate from 9 a.m to 1 p.m in the Senior Center parking lot at 46425 Tyler Rd., Van Buren Township.
“We wanted to extend this out to the community since our local food banks are at capacity with limited resources,” said Trustee Reggie Miller.
A limited supply of food items will include Ensure (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry), fresh produce, frozen meals and a white ribbon to be displayed outside, or in a window, to show support to healthcare workers. These items are subject to change.
“We’ve been working to meet the needs of as many people as possible who are autoimmune compromised and are making sure our senior population has food during the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order,” said Township Supervisor Kevin McNamara.
On Saturday, April 4, Van Buren Township received $20,000, from United Way for Southeastern Michigan as part of a COVID Emergency Response Grant. This grant provided for the supply and distribution of nutritional food allocated to feed senior citizens in the township and area food banks. This grant is being used for the April 28 drive-in food bank.
