Three families reportedly were burned out of their apartment units beginning at about 8 p.m. Monday at Parkwood Manor on Tyler Road in Van Buren Township.
VBT fire fighters reportedly were taking part in a training exercise when they got the call and responded immediately. The cause of the fire was still under investigation on Tuesday. No injuries were reported and the Red Cross helped those who were made homeless, including Patrice Blount, who was interviewed on Channel 7 news.
The temperature was 22 degrees when fire crews arrived to begin putting out the fire. Crowds of residents from the Parkwood complex stood around watching the fire-fighting efforts. Belleville Fire Department was called for mutual aid.
