At its regular meeting April 19, the Van Buren Township Board of Trustees heard Supervisor Linda Combs present a proclamation naming May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in the township.
It read:
WHEREAS, the Charter Township of Van Buren has many citizens who are concerned about motorcycle safety and awareness for touring, recreation, and economical transportation; and
WHEREAS, May is the nationally recognized month that motorcycles become more prevalent on our streets, the need to be aware of their presence is of the utmost urgency; and
WHEREAS, the inclusion of motorcycle awareness as a distinct part of the driver education curriculum and motorcycle rider education programs will help to promote safe driver and motorcycle riding practices; and
WHEREAS, Wayne County has had an active Motorcycle Riders Education program running continuously since 1979, one of the longest running in the country; and
WHEREAS, it is in the interest of our community and the citizens of the Charter Township of Van Buren to note the increase in the amount of motorcycle traffic, as we enter the warm weather months, to enable the reduction of accidents and injuries involving motorcycles, I hereby proclaim May as Motorcycles Awareness Month in the Charter Township of Van Buren Township.
