“Now, if I could just figure out how to cook for two instead of a teenage-boy mini-army, all will be good,” said Lisa Lothringer, assistant executive director of the Van Buren Township Downtown Development Authority.
She said her 19-year-old twin sons have gone off to college and she is trying to get used to her empty nest.
Joshua and John attended the Monroe County Middle College, which is a hybrid high school and college partnership between the Monroe County Intermediate School District and Monroe County Community College.
This five-year high school allows the students to attend both high school and college classes on the MCCC campus instead of a traditional high school setting. A “capstone” project and 100 hours of volunteer hours within the community are also requirements of the program.
Both boys graduated with a 4.0 in their high school classes and both graduated Summa Cum Laude (Joshua 4.0 – John 3.987) from MCCC. They both spoke at the college commencement ceremony where they received their Associate Degrees.
Joshua now is at University of Michigan Dearborn Honors College studying pre-med and public health administration. He opted to for the Dearborn campus because of smaller class sizes and opportunities for research. He plans to be an Otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor). He received the Metropolitan Scholarship and the Downriver Alumni scholarship both towards his tuition.
John is at Eastern Michigan University – Honors College studying Marketing and Business. He competed for, and received, one of the 20 Presidential Scholarships awarded for 2016. This provides him with four years of room, board, and tuition and he plans to obtain his Master’s Degree within that time frame.
“Their Dad and I are very proud of the young men they have grown to be,” Lothringer said. John A. Lothringer is her husband and their father. She said “little John” is John L. Lothringer.
“Besides all of their academic achievements, the boys have a deep love of all things automotive and have their own graphics design and vinyl cutting business – Midshift Media.”
