A 6 p.m. public information meeting has been set for Monday, Oct. 21, by the Belleville City Council to discuss the proposed 2-mill special assessment for public safety on the Nov. 5 ballot.
The meeting will be held at the Belleville High School Commons and then the regular 7:30 p.m. council meeting will follow.
At Monday’s regular meeting of the city council, that lasted just seven minutes, the council also:
• Approved the sixth-annual BHS Newtech Zombie Walk/Run from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at High Street. The approval includes closing High Street from Main to Roys, and also closing the Main Street parking lane on the southwest side from High to the Denton Road Bridge. The event is co-sponsored by the Belleville Downtown Development Authority;
• Agreed to put on the next meeting’s agenda the Doane’s Landing $81,721 change order request for payment from C&R Lakeside Landscape for 29 linear feet of cantilever wall at a cost of $67,706; 7 linear feet of 15-foot panes for $6,625; wall removal for cantilever return, which includes excavator $3,700 and labor $1,575; and footing removal, crain down time two hours at $746 per hour $1,492, air hammer $173, and labor $450. DPW Director Rick Rutherford said the contractor ran into a few issues as the project got under way. The elevations were different as the wall extended toward Belleville Road so the sheets had to be moved in to be driven in properly. Also, when driving the cantilever panels near the transition, a giant piece of concrete was discovered that stopped the sheet from being driven so the dirt had to be removed so the concrete could be removed. “In an effort to keep overages down, we hauled the dirt to the DPW yard and we will use as much rip rap as we have in the yard,” Rutherford said in a memo to the board; and
• Approved accounts payable of $1,873,425.41 and the following purchases in excess of $500: $98,333.33 to C&R Lakeside Landscape (payment 2 of 3 per contract price) for seawall replacement; $1,914 to Hennessey Engineers for plan review/inspection of Scott Jones’ project (from escrow account); and $1,740 to Crawford Door for replacing rotted wood garage door on the DPW building.
