Frank M. Musser, a highly acclaimed swimming and wrestling coach at Belleville High School and North Middle School, will be inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame.
Musser and 15 other coaches will be formally inducted in ceremonies on Sept. 17 as the Class of 2017 in the Terrace Room of the Bovee University Center on the campus of Central Michigan University.
Musser, who now lives in Russells Point, OH, graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor of science in education in 1971 and was recruited to Belleville High School that same year.
He started the Tiger Diving Club and coached numerous league diving champions and placers, including Barry Susterka, an All-American High School Diver, and Aleta Rice, four-time AIAW Small College All-American at Clarion.
He also coached wrestling and had four straight years of undefeated middle school wrestling teams. Musser had five league championships in 11 years. Nineteen North Middle School wrestlers wrestled in the state meets and seven were All-State.
He earned the Bruce Harland Award in 1979. Musser retired in 2002 after 28 years of coaching – 48 seasons coached.
He and his wife of 45 years, Jacklyn, have three sons. Michael, 40, is a teacher/coach at Belleville High School. Brian, 37, is a former bank mortgage officer who is working on a master’s degree in Early Elementary Education and hopes to teach and coach. Gregory, 33, is a teacher/coach at Seymour High School in Seymour, IN.
In the early 1990s, Musser was Junior Warden at Trinity Episcopal Church in Belleville and president of two different homeowners’ associations.
He earned a double master’s degree in physical education and social foundations from Eastern Michigan University.
Musser was nominated for the honor by Charles Smelt of Northville.
The Michigan High School Coaches Association was founded on the campus of Central Michigan University in 1954. The Hall of Fame is located in the Student Activities Center.
