On Friday, State Representative Bill LaVoy, D-Monroe, issued this statement on protecting Second Amendment rights:
“I am disappointed in my Democratic colleagues, namely Rep. Wittenberg, for introducing misguided legislation that would place restrictions on the ability to own and responsibly use guns for sport and to carry.
“I am proud to have the endorsement of the NRA and am not shy about my support for the Second Amendment and our right to bear arms. My colleagues’ bills work to diminish the Second Amendment and I do not support any measure that interjects the government into gun owners’ lives. Michiganders who enjoy hunting for sport or who carry responsibly should not be targeted by the government for dutifully following current laws.
“Suggesting that we place unnecessary restrictions on gun owners is irresponsible as legislators. We are elected to defend and protect our constituents, not to limit their rights. Thus, I am not only disappointed, but I am in severe opposition to these bills,” Rep. LaVoy said.
LaVoy is running for reelection in the 17th District, which includes Sumpter Township.
