Former Belleville educator and coach Samuel Vicchy is among the 15 men who will be inducted into the 58th class of the Michigan High School Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at Central Michigan University.
Vicchy, who coached for 38 years before retiring, now lives in Hernando, FL. He started off as a coach and teacher of science and chemistry at Erie East High School, 1961-65; then went on to Erie Cathedral Prep School, 1965-69; Kent State University School, 1969-70; and Belleville High School, 1970-1999. He retired from BHS in 1999.
Vicchy graduated from Scottdale High School, PA, where he played football and baseball. There was no swimming team. He earned his bachelor of science degree in education at Slippery Rock State College where he played soccer for four years.
Vicchy’s athletic director at BHS was Harry Hidenfelter. At BHS Vicchy coached men’s and women’s swimming, women’s cross country and track, and men’s golf. Vicchy was honored as Golf Coach of the Year in 1972; Western Wayne Coach of the Year, 1970, 1972, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1980; and Women’s Swimming Region II Coach of the Year in 1986.
The formal induction of the Michigan High School Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame Class of 2016 will take place in the Terrace Room of the Bovee University Center on the campus of CMU.
