Editorial: School Board, Library Board rail on Gov. Snyder

First, it happened Monday night at the School Board meeting. Some very harsh words were said about Gov. Snyder who had just signed SB 571 into law. The legislation bars libraries, school districts, and local governments from spending public funds on TV ads, mailers or phone messages about local ballot proposals 60 days before an election.
Gov. Snyder has asked the legislators for a clean-up bill to fix that provision that he signed, but we don’t see it yet.
On Monday, board members were concerned about their non-homestead millage, they desperately need renewed, that is going before local voters in May. They want to be able to tell voters about it so it will pass, but now, legally, they only have until March 3.
Then, on Tuesday, those at the Belleville Area District Library Board, who are seeking a November ballot proposal to fund a new library, voiced frustrations.
Newly elected Library Board Chairwoman Sharon Peters said she, among many others, had personally written to Gov. Snyder asking him not to sign that hasty bill, but he signed it anyway.
Barbara Miller was at both meetings and she said the new League of Women Voters group she is organizing will be able to give out non-partisan information during those 60 days before the election. Just what we need to get the info out.
