An organizational meeting of a Belleville-area chapter of the League of Women Voters will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 18, at the private banquet room of the Something to Talk About restaurant on Sumpter Road in Belle Plaza (formerly called Paula’s).
Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting – both men and women. Visitors may order from the menu for a meal or a dessert or beverage.
Paula Bowman, vice president of the Northwestern Wayne County League of Women Voters, will address the meeting. Her chapter will mentor the Belleville group. Bowman is bringing along a state officer of the group, as well.
Belleville attorney Barbara Rogalle Miller is helping to organize the local chapter in this busy political year. She invites those interested to call her for more information at (734) 697-4455.
She suggests that the new chapter be composed of voters from Belleville, Van Buren, and Sumpter.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. It never supports or opposes any political party or candidate.
In a recent press release, the U.S. League of Women Voters said: “Voter turnout in the United States is among the lowest of all established democracies. In fact, presidential year turnout is around 60% and midterm turnout is around 40%. The 2014 election had a 42% turnout rate, the lowest since 1942. One of the more common reasons why people don’t vote is lack of information.”
