A residency program aimed at “building character through music” has been set for next March at McBride Middle School.
McBride is one of six schools in the Great Detroit area that is targeted to expose more than 3,400 students to the best musical artists possible.
“We believe if they can see it, they can be it, which is why we are beyond excited to have the PRISM Quartet in residence with us here, in the heart of Detroit,” said Damien Crutcher, the founding executive director of Crescendo Detroit, one of the six schools targeted.
While in residence, PRISM will give assembly performances, composition classes, learning labs, and coaching sessions.
The PRISM contemporary-classical saxophone quartet was founded in 1984 at the University of Michigan. PRISM has performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony.
Tim Miller, who teaches band at McBride Middle School, was an original member of the PRISM Quartet.
Current members are Timothy McAllister, soprano; Zachary Shemon, alto; Matthew Levy, tenor; and Taimur Sullivan, baritone.
A Homecoming Concert to benefit the Southeast Michigan Residency program will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at First Presbyterian Church, 300 N. Washington Street, Ypsilanti. Tickets are $22 for general admission and $17 for students with ID. To purchase tickets and for more information, visit www.prismquartet.com/concerts .
