Danny Ali-Ray Ramsey, 23, pled guilty to a charge of retail fraud-2nd from Walmart in Van Buren Township on July 30. The original charge of retail fraud was dismissed.
His case was handled under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act and his case will be deferred for 24 months. If he stays out of trouble, it will be dropped. He has to pay $400 in costs.
He had been in custody for 28 days by the time he got before 34th District Court Judge Tina Brooks Green on Aug. 26 and she released him on personal bond.
When asked about restitution, Van Buren Township Police Detective Donovan McCarthy said the store said it cannot sell the items that were recovered.
Ramsey said he was stopped in front of the store after the theft and all the property he took – including clothing, cosmetic items, and electronic products – were recovered and returned.
“I think that’s a bunch of crap,” said Judge Green of Walmart’s claim, saying the story Walmart tells you to pay five times the value or they’ll sue doesn’t hold water. She said if he gets such a letter to throw it away. She said she’s never seen Walmart carry through on such a threat.
While Ramsey was pretty much done with this charge, the Wayne County Third Circuit Court website indicates that on Aug. 25, the day before this court session with Judge Green, a warrant for his arrest for violation of probation on a drug use charge was issued by Judge Gregory Bill.
Daron Quantez Weatherspoon
Daron Quantez Weatherspoon, 26, waived his preliminary exam on charges of fleeing a police officer in a vehicle and retail fraud-2nd degree. He also is labeled a habitual offender.
Judge Green bound him over to circuit court for his arraignment on the information on Sept. 9.
His bond of $5,000/10% had been posted and was continued. This incident occurred July 24, 2014 in Van Buren Township. Detective Ken Toney is the officer in charge.
Weatherspoon was on parole after serving five years for assault with intent to rob while armed and separate instances of armed robbery on two different dates.
James Burton Adkins
Michael Vincent, the attorney for James Burton Adkins, announced a plea deal in which his client pled guilty to attempted fleeing and eluding, which under the Criminal Code is a misdemeanor. He also pled guilty to operating while impaired.
The original charges of fleeing and eluding police and operating while intoxicated-2nd were dropped.
Adkins said the incident happened in Van Buren Township on June 6 and he fled from police and drank before driving.
Judge Green set an 11 a.m., Oct. 13 pre-sentencing and his personal recognizance bond of $5,000 was continued. Vincent said Adkins had spent 2 ½ months in jail. Adkins’ license will be revoked for the fleeing and eluding charge.
Devin Michael Beach
Devin Michael Beach, 18, was set for his preliminary exam before Judge Green but the charges were dismissed. Beach was out on $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
He was charged with home invasion-3rd degree, malicious destruction of personal property, and larceny less than $200 in the City of Belleville on Oct. 11, 2014.
His court-appointed defense attorney David Lankford announced that the complainant will not appear to testify.
Deonte Marquis Fizer
Deonte Marquis Fizer, 21, who was due in court for his probable cause conference, did not show up and so a bench warrant was signed by Judge Green.
Fizer was out after posting $5,000/10% bond for assault on a police officer in Van Buren Township on Aug. 12. Lt. Charles Bazzy is the officer in charge of the case.
