Sumpter Township Police are investigating the brutal sexual assault of a resident in the 18100 block of Elwell Road at about 2 a.m. Sunday, June 3.
Det. John Toth said a woman, with two small sleeping children, had a feeling someone was outside her home and she was texting with the neighbors who looked around but didn’t see anyone. They suggested she call the police.
She didn’t call the police and about an hour later someone knocked on her door, which is not unusual since she is close friends with the neighbors next door who go back and forth.
She opened the door and immediately was assaulted and knocked unconscious and beaten. The children slept behind their closed bedroom door during the assault.
The woman called police and was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital at 5 a.m., where she was treated and released about seven hours later.
Det. Toth said a Criminal Sexual Conduct kit was secured and the crime scene was processed for evidence that might contain DNA with the hopes of putting together a DNA profile.
Det. Toth warned residents to be alert to late-night, unannounced visitors. He suggested using yard lights to illuminate surroundings and look out the window to see who is at the door before opening it.
He said people should not hesitate to call the police if they are not sure who is outside their door.
Pending case, guilty pleas
Det. Toth reported the pizza delivery robbery suspect has waived his preliminary exam at 34th District Court and has been bound over to Circuit Court for trial.
Also, the men who were arrested for stealing metal plaques from veterans’ tombstones have pled guilty, Toth said.
