Pastor John Moses, who helps care for children in the slums of India, prisoners, families of lepers and runs an orphanage for 38 children, is visiting Belleville and will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Liberty Gospel church, 105 N. Liberty Street.
Pastor Moses also spoke last Sunday at Liberty Gospel. He visited other places during the intervening days and planned to address the monthly meeting of an Indian group, the Detroit Teuau Christian Fellowship on Sept. 6 in Bloomfield Hills.
Pastor Moses, who left his wife and two daughters in India to come to America to seek support for his work, belongs to the Followers of Christ Ministries.
He works with the “neglected people” in Vizianagaram, Andrhra Pradesh, India, on the southeast coast of the Bay of Bengal.
He said 20 pastors work together to also send money monthly to remote-area pastors who are paid by their congregations with vegetables and eggs.
In the summer, during the 40 days of school vacation, Pastor Moses helps run a daycare center in the slum area to provide teachers and tutors to 110 children who don’t get good educations in the regular schools. He said by the 10th year most fail school and are out. He and others try to boost their education and provide backpacks and school supplies for the coming year.
He said the caste system is in India and he works with those called the Untouchables, also providing food and medicine for 70 leprosy families.
The ministry also provides free tailoring classes and every three months turn out a new batch of 25 people who can go out and earn money for their work. He said they have turned out six batches so far.
