A considerable hole in the pavement of West Columbia Avenue in the City of Belleville was reported in front of St. Anthony Catholic Church by Sam the United Parcel Service driver in the middle of the night July 2-3.
At Monday’s regular meeting of the Belleville City Council, Police Chief Hal Berriman reported that Sam brought the hole to the attention of the police department and Wayne County was called.
Chief Berriman said a bigger hole, five feet deep and several feet wide and long was found beneath the hole on the surface.
Berriman said the county workers came and filled the hole and patched the road surface. They said they don’t know when it will get fixed permanently.
All the temporary repairs were made before early-morning traffic began driving on West Columbia Avenue early Thursday.
City Manager Diana Kollmeyer said the hole was dry, so there was no water involved.
