In a 14-minute meeting April 10, the Sumpter Township Planning Commission set a public hearing for 7:05 p.m. Thursday, May 8, regarding the request of the Sumpter Roller Rink for a special-exception use permit.
Owners of the Roller Rink, Bewey Horn and Kathleen Spires, told the planning commission that they would like to spread out in uses for the rink at 19750 Sumpter Road.
Besides roller skating, they would like to have exercise classes, dances, party rentals, church revivals, and graduation parties, as well as other events.
Horn said the dances would not be loud parties. He said fraternities from Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan already have had roller skating parties for the first hour, followed by two hours of dancing.
He said he was advised that he should get special land use approval for expanding the uses of the roller rink, so that’s what they are seeking.
