Scott Russell, a member of the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education, is among 24 Michigan Political Leadership Program Fellows who will graduate today from one of the nation’s most prestigious leadership training grounds.
The 2012 Fellows was honored at MPLP’s 18th Annual Fundraising Dinner on Feb. 28 at Laurel Manor in Livonia featuring two White House strategists – Robert Gibbs and Karen Hughes – who shared their insights.
Russell, works for J. D. Power and Associates, is married and the father of two daughters in the Van Buren Public Schools.
“We congratulate these emerging leaders,” said Douglas B. Roberts, Ph.D., who directs the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research where MPLP makes its home. “They are testimony to the continuing success of MPLP and to the vision of those who founded the program.”
During the 10-month program, MPLP Fellows tour key Michigan landmarks, learn from the state’s most experienced political leaders and take part in hands-on activities from taping television ads to facing down tough editorial boards.
The program’s focus is on practical politics, preparation for leadership from grassroots to statewide visibility while forging relationships destined to outlast the program that began in 1992.

What happened to the Child Watch program promoted so heavily during Russell’s election bid to the school board? It isn’t around because it it was a shameless act of self-promotion used to get himself elected. The child watch program clearly wasn’t about child safety, just as his stint on the school board clearly isn’t about education or the school district. Now Russell is sucking up to prime Democratic Club members, and unbelievably, has already gotten the support of gullable key players. Russell may manage to con himself into higher office, but he isn’t and never will be a true leader. It is time to say NO to Scott Russell, and to look elsewhere for our Democratic leadership.
ProDemAmanda: We held a community meeting to educate people about the program. While there was some interest, we never reached the critical mass we needed to get this program off the ground. However, if you feel this is a worthwhile program, I invite you to contact me and perhaps we can work together to generate interest and relaunch the program.
Yes I hear a distinct sucking sound in our local Democratic leadership…..
Scott Russell has come a long way on the school board. He started out weak, and was focused on the wrong things. He now understands how schools work, and is supportive of the tough job the superintendent faces. Give him a chance.
