A large crowd turned out at the Angel Food Catering Garage in Van Buren Township on Oct. 8 for what was billed as a “citizen-led town hall to take action for a safer community.”
This was inspired by the announced upcoming delivery of radioactive waste to a Van Burn Township landfill.
For the first hour, Jessica Peterson of Canton presented her personal research on radioactive waste, Wayne Disposal, and its owner Republic Waste. An unidentified man said Republic Waste is a public corporation and 35% of it is owned by an entity that is Bill Gates. Later it was learned Bill Gates also has invested in Waste Management, the other landfill in Van Buren Township.
The Oct. 9 hearing before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Kevin Cox on the lawsuit filed by local communities was adjourned until Oct. 16 after the communities asked for detailed historical information and Republic Waste needed time to gather it.
On Oct. 15, the defendants in the suit filed a referral to federal court for the case, taking it out of the state court.
