Belleville High School 2024 valedictorian Parker Joseph Mears was presented with a scholarship from the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Downriver during its May 13 meeting in Riverview.
The club met to present its annual scholarship awards. Attendees included U of M alumni, distinguished speakers, promising high school juniors who have an interest in applying to U of M and scholarship recipients and their families.
Katie Hartwell’s scholarship team selected three high school students who will be attending Michigan in the fall with the 2024 Leaders and Best Scholarships.
The Lloyd Carr Leaders and Best scholarship was awarded to Park Joseph Mears who will be entering the College of Engineering in Ann Arbor. According to the club’s news release, Parker loves mathematics and will focus on computer programming. He is a well-rounded student and was in both the marching and symphony bands. He was team captain of the robotics team, treasurer of the chess club, and captain of the soccer team. He scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT.
Two other scholarship winners were Nouman Abrar, valedictorian of the Riverview High School graduating class, and Anna Catherine Klein, the valedictorian of Flat Rock High School.
The awards are a one-time, $1,500 scholarship.
Also in attendance were high school juniors invited from every Downriver high school chosen by their principals and counselors. The juniors were given advice on how and when to apply to the U of M. They were advised to take their free time this summer to begin writing their essays for admittance.
