The Wayne County Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan has been set for noon on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Belleville Yacht Club, 831 E. Huron River Dr., Van Buren Township.
The day will begin with 9:30 a.m. Plunger check-in and registration and pre-plunge party, followed by the 11:45 a.m. parade of costumes.
The plunge into the icy waters of Belleville Lake is set for noon. Plungers then celebrate with an After-Splash Bash. There are complimentary lunches for the Plungers and tickets sold to spectators for their lunches.
A goal of more than $1.2 million has been set statewide for the 30 Polar Plunges to be held in Michigan in January, February, and March.
By participating in a Polar Plunge around the state jumpers are helping to raise funds for more than 27,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan.
Special Olympics Michigan is a year-round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities. Although sports are the “vehicle,” the ultimate goal of special Olympics is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities.
Polar Plungers are a Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) event. LETR is one of the largest grassroots fundraisers for Special Olympics globally. LETR consists of officers from both Law Enforcement and Corrections who raise funds and create awareness for Special Olympics Michigan year-round.
