On Saturday, July 27, at about 1:45 a.m., Sumpter Township Police and Fire were dispatched to the area of Bemis Road at Lohr for a traffic crash with injuries.
Sumpter Public Safety Director/Police Chief Eric Luke said the investigation is ongoing, although preliminary findings appear to show the following:
A 46-year-old Van Buren Township man failed to navigate the t-intersection at Bemis Road and northbound Lohr, crashing the motorcycle he was driving in a yard just south of the intersection.
The motorcyclist, who was reportedly uninjured from the first crash then drove back onto the roadway, failing to yield the right-of-way, and was struck by a 28-year-old Sumpter Township man’s vehicle that was traveling eastbound Bemis.
The motorcyclist sustained a very serious left leg injury and was transported by HVA to an area hospital, Chief Luke said.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, Chief Luke said. Sumpter Township police are awaiting toxicology reports to progress further with the investigation.
Sumpter Township was assisted on scene by the Van Buren Township Department of Public Safety and the Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
