Michigan State Police are investigating a crash near Detroit Metro Airport that left a Van Buren Township man dead at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19. Emergency crews responded to the crash on the eastbound I-94 ramp to southbound I-275 in Romulus, just west of the airport.
A preliminary investigation showed a 2011 Kia Sorento ran off the roadway to the right and rolled several times. A 36-year-old VBT man was ejected from the SUV and killed instantly, police said. Police have not released the victim’s name.
Weather may have played a role in the crash, after a heavy round of snow moved across Southeast Michigan Saturday morning, leaving nearly seven inches in Romulus. As temperatures heated up throughout the day, snow melted, and then froze over on the roadways as temps dropped back into the 20s overnight.
