In a news release on Oct. 14, Van Buren Township announced the start of a comprehensive property site study project for the township-owned 181-acre parcel located at the northwest corner of Tyler and Belleville roads. This multi-phase planning effort will assess the property’s development potential and create a framework for future growth guided by community input.
“This project represents an exciting opportunity to shape Van Buren’s future in a thoughtful and sustainable way,” said supervisor Kevin McNamara. “Before anything is built, we want to hear from our residents about what they envision for this land, what will best serve our community, economy, and environment for generations to come.”
The study, led by planning consultants Giffels Webster, will evaluate the site’s market conditions, infrastructure, environmental constraints, and long-term feasibility. The results will inform conceptual plans and marketing strategies to attract the right mix of development while preserving the balance of residential, commercial, and green space.
Community participation is a key component of the process. Residents and business owners are invited to complete a short online survey to share ideas and even help name the project. Future engagement opportunities will include public workshops and stakeholder sessions as planning moves forward.
“This site study is an important first step in realizing the potential of this property,” said Merrie Coburn, director of the Downtown Development Authority. “Our goal is to create a vision that respects Van Buren’s heritage while embracing new opportunities for growth. By engaging our residents from the beginning, we can ensure the outcome reflects what the community truly wants to see on this site.”
The news release urges readers to take the short survey here, adding your input is valued.
