On Friday morning, Feb. 25, at around 9 a.m., the Van Buren Township Fire Department was called to a fire at 15 Daisy Blvd. in the mobile home park at 600 Sumpter Rd.
Fire Chief Amy Brow said they were short-handed, so they called Belleville Fire Department for mutual aid for personnel and Sumpter Township for a tanker truck because there are no fire hydrants in the park.
Chief Brow said the fire basically extinguished itself. It had been smoldering for a long time, got hot, and then basically snuffed itself out, she said.
The room of origin, the living room, had some melting and smoke damage, and the damage was mainly confined to that room, she said.
The property owner went to work the night before and when she came home in the morning she saw the smoke.
“Two cats didn’t make it. We tried, but they didn’t make it,” Chief Brow said. She said they apparently died from the smoke.
One door and one window needed to be boarded up.
