Jack Knowles, who has been serving as the Van Buren Township Director of Planning and Economic Development since December, has resigned with an exit date of May 22.
Knowles, who also serves as an elected trustee in Scio Township, said he has several job possibilities and so he can leave the township on his own terms.
Knowles told the Independent on Tuesday that if the township can get someone in place to do his job, he would be glad to leave before May 22 to save the township some money.
Recently VBT hired a deputy director to assist Knowles. Darryl Fecho was approved for a full-time salary of $62,400.
Knowles did not tell the Independent why he had resigned, but an inside source said Knowles submitted a letter to Supervisor Linda Combs explaining in detail.

I for one am sorry to see Mr. Knowles leave the township. His door was always open and if Trustee Jahr had an issue with him, he should have used it. For a Board member to publicly embarrass an employee is rude and unprofessional.
I think Knowles was a very poised professional. Unfortunately, we have a group of politicians who feel entitled and can do whatever they want in office without any regard to the community. I will be happy to see Sharry Budd go. She really needs to retire and let someone who is innovative run for that position. Jahr and Hart, please move on. All you have done is damage the reputation of our community. Many people are leaving a township that used to be a great place to live.
Rumor has it that Hart will run for supervisor and Budd will retire. We have alot of time before that so hopefully something happens before we lose more quality people like Knowles.
All we can do is hope that the rumor is correct that at long last Sharry Budd will retire. Many residents would agree with “concerned resident” that her lack of any innovative ideas and the sense of entitlement is getting stale. Her unprofessional behavior of the past is well known at township hall and the residents deserve someone that can be creative and motivated to help the taxpayers with the Visteon debacle. She voted yes for Visteon but keeps her distance from taking responsibility for this vote.
