Waste Management contractors are working on the excavation of cells 13 and 15 directly south of the existing Woodland Meadows Landfill on the east side of the site, near Hannan Road.
Excavation is expected to be completed in this area by the end of August. At that time the landfill liner installation will begin…
Once the liner is installed, a 1’ drainage layer of aggregate is placed, with a series of landfill gas collection pipes. This work is anticipated to be completed by Nov. 1. Upon completion of construction WM will submit the Construction Certification report to the State of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), for their review. Once approved by EGLE, WM anticipates being able to place waste in the new cells beginning in early 2022.
WM has also been working to update the landfill gas system at Woodland Meadows. Eighteen vertical gas extraction wells have been drilled throughout the existing waste mass at Woodland Meadows, mostly on the south and north sides of the landfill. Twelve more vertical gas wells remain to be installed over the next few months.
Due to recent weather-related flooding events in SE Michigan, Woodland Meadows has been keeping extended hours of operation, as allowed by our host community agreement. Woodland has remained open until 8 p.m. as needed, which can vary on a daily/weekly basis, to accommodate the emergency influx of debris coming from the recent flood victims in and around the City of Detroit. Regular hours should be resumed in the next few weeks. WM has provided as many as 40 additional trucks and crew, some coming from as far away as Battle Creek and Saginaw, to assist in the emergency clean-up…
