The Sumpter Country Fest Parade kicks off at noon on Saturday, heading south on Sumpter Road from Judd Road to the fairgrounds across from township hall.
This year’s Grand Marshall is Sumpter Township Supervisor John Morgan. Honored Citizens are Pat and Frank Sobecki, Jr.
Supervisor John Morgan
Supervisor Morgan has lived in Sumpter Township for 39 years. He is married to Beatrice and they have two children, Jacqueline and Gary, and four grandchildren.
Morgan is a veteran of the U.S. Army and has a bachelor of science in Elementary Education and a master of arts in Education Leadership, both from Eastern Michigan University.
He is a retired school teacher from the Romulus Community Schools.
Morgan was elected in 1978-1982 as a Sumpter Township trustee and appointed treasurer in 1982. He was then elected treasurer 1984-2014.
In 2014 he was appointed Sumpter Township Supervisor when Supervisor Johnny Vawters had to step down for health reasons.
Pat and Frank Sobecki, Jr.
Honored Citizens Pat and Frank Sobecki, Jr. have been married for 38 years and have three children and seven grandchildren.
Frank is a lifetime resident of Sumpter Township and Pat has been a resident for 38 years.
Frank retired from Ford Motor Company after 34 years and Pat retired from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after 27 years.
Pat just received the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2015 from September Days Senior Center in Van Buren Township. She is also on the funeral luncheon committee at St. Anthony’s Church in Belleville and a member of the Quilting Club at St. Anthony’s and September Days. Pat also is a member of the Election Committee for Sumpter Township.
Frank has been a member of St. Anthony’s Boy Scout Troop #793 for a total of 45 years, mentoring youth in the tri-community of Sumpter Township, Belleville, and Van Buren Township.
Frank has received numerous awards in the scouting program, including Catholic Youth Organization’s Henry Vassel Award, CYO’s James Coughlin Award, the Silver Beaver Award, District Award of Merit, George Meany Award, and the United Way Community Service Award. He also received the Catholic St. George Award for Outstanding Service to Youth.
Frank has been a member of St. Anthony’s Men’s Club for 38 years. He was Co-Grand Marshall in the 2010 Belleville Harvest Fest Parade, celebrating Boys Scouts’ and Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary.
Frank is also a member of VFW Post 4434 and the PLAV Post 167 on Bemis Road in Van Buren Township.
