Sumpter Township Clerk Esther Hurst asked the township board to approve hiring a temporary Clerk’s office assistant to fill in for an employee who is taking a planned medical leave as the busy election season approaches.
At the Aug. 13 meeting of the township board, Clerk Hurst said after the medical leave, she expects the employee to take short-term disability and then a family leave kicks in after that in the union contract.
She said she didn’t know how long she will need the temporary assistant. She said in the union contract no interviews are required for the position and she has in mind two people who know the job who might be able to come in, but she has yet to talk to them. When asked who they were, she said she would rather not give their names since she hasn’t talked to them.
The board unanimously approved hiring the temporary assistant. After the meeting, Clerk Hurst made arrangements to meet with Maria Beaudrie, who had retired from the Clerk’s office.
In other business at the Aug. 13 meeting, the board:
• Approved appointment of a committee to review and advise on four formal vendor proposals to redesign the township web site: Trustee Tim Rush, Public Safety Director/Police Chief Eric Luke, and deputies Karen Armatis, Wendy Snook, and Anthony Burdick;
• Approved hiring Stathakis for twice-monthly (every two weeks) cleaning of the fire hall at a cost of $177.65 per month;
• Heard Clerk Hurst announce that the annual community-wide yard sale in Sumpter Township will be Aug. 23-25. No permits will be needed for these sales. Also, she said, there are a few tickets left for the seniors’ trip to see the Tigers play Cleveland on Aug. 29. Cost is $40 per person which includes transportation; and
• Heard Trustee Don LaPorte ask attorney Rob Young to give the board an update on the contract with Republic Waste the attorney has been working on for so long. Young said he would at the next meeting.
