On Saturday, Oct. 5, members of the Sumpter Township Police Department and a group of family and friends took part in the Heroes on Hines Half Marathon and 5k in Hines Park, Plymouth Township.
The event was held to celebrate the dedication of the new Wayne County First Responder Memorial, located on the corner of Haggerty Road and Hines Drive. The new memorial includes the name of Sumpter Township Police Officer Roy Graham, who was killed in the line of duty on July 28, 1985.
“We ran in honor of Officer Graham,” said Sumpter Police Captain Eric Luke, adding that the team wore especially designed T-shirts that said “In honor of Officer Roy Graham” on the back.
Completing their respective races were:
Half Marathon: Sergeant Patrick Gannon
“Congratulations, Sgt. Gannon, on a job well done. We are all proud of you,” Captain Luke said, pointing out Gannon ran 13.1 miles.
5K: Captain Eric Luke, Detective John Toth, Officers Elizabeth Egerer, Colleen Carefelle and Joseph Balowski, and Operations Coordinator Malissa Baker.
Also, family members: Trully Luke, Mike Paquette, Logan Toth, Chloe Toth, Lauren Gannon, and Kyrie Gannon; and friends Maurine Fry and Kaylee Settles.
Team Sumpter placed second in the fastest team competition, right behind the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, and placed third for the Community Spirit Award for team size.
