On Monday, the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education set a special meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the school administration building.
The purpose of the meeting was to rescind action that set an election in May to renew the 18 mills non-homestead property tax, which is expiring.
Van Buren Township Clerk Leon Wright said the school millage was the only question on that ballot, so now the May election is cancelled.
The agenda calls for the board to go into closed-door session at the beginning of the meeting and then vote on the election. Nothing else was on the agenda, but there was room for public comment.
On Thursday, Feb. 11, School Supt. Michael Van Tassel set up a Tele-Town Hall meeting with three unnamed school board members where people are asked to register on line for the 7 p.m. session by providing their name and phone number. Those registering are to receive a call and be automatically connected to the Town Hall. Log on to www.vanburenschools.net and click on Tele-Town Hall Meeting to register.
In his letter on the home page Supt. Van Tassel said the Tele-Town Hall was set, “To accommodate busy schedules that often make it difficult for some to attend evening meetings…”
Also, a regular school board meeting has been set for 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at the BHS cafeteria to replace the Feb. 1 meeting that was cancelled because a quorum was not available to meet.
