State Rep. Joe Bellino, R-Monroe, spoke to people from across Michigan attending the second-annual Unite to Face Addiction rally at the Capitol in Lansing on May 18.
Rep. Bellino represents Sumpter Township, among other communities.
He accepted the invitation to speak from Unite to Face Addiction – Michigan to share his personal journey overcoming addiction. The freshman state representative has had over 32 years of sobriety recovering from alcohol and drug addictions. By sharing his past struggles and his life after becoming sober, Bellino hopes to motivate others to get and remain clean.
“You never think, ‘I will become a drug addict, get sober sometime after, and then life will go on’ when you’re 25 years old,” Rep. Bellino said. “However, that’s exactly what happened to me. I was just fortunate enough to get sober and then started making some dramatic changes in my life.”
Rep. Bellino spent six years working for the Catholic charity at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, owned his own small business in Monroe for nearly 20 years, served over 15 years on the Monroe County Community College Board of Trustees, and most recently, was elected to represent the 17th District in the Michigan House of Representatives.
