Belleville Police are seeking arrest warrants from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office for the male and female who were in the vehicle that smashed into a corner of Hayward’s party store, through the fence, and fell on its side onto the deck next to the lake.
Police Chief Hal Berriman said they are seeking obstruction of justice charges against the two because they won’t tell police who was driving when the car came over the Belleville Bridge and didn’t turn enough to stay on Main Street.
The accident occurred 2:32 a.m. June 10. After the crash both occupants crawled from the vehicle and the female climbed onto a boat that had four people on board. All five occupants of the boat were interviewed as witnesses by Belleville Police, Chief Berriman said.
The woman went to J&T Crova Towing to get her purse that had been left in the car and when police connected the name in the purse with the witness on the boat, she was detained.
Chief Berriman said the woman, Kristi Yates, was wanted on a felony warrant out of Texas and Texas is seeking extradition. Her bond was $200,000 or 10% and the $20,000 was paid.
The man in the car was taken to the hospital to be examined even though he said he wasn’t injured. Chief Berriman said the drop from the parking lot to the deck was a substantial distance and the impact was severe.
Chief Berriman said the man is an area resident and he and the female were known for hanging out at Diamondback Saloon in Van Buren Township.
At Hayward’s, George pointed out that the vehicle just missed hitting the large Christian cross against the wall, missed damaging the wooden steps down to the dock, and missed hitting the gas tank that fuels boats. And, no one was injured. He attributed all that to the Cross and Jesus.
