Last July a new auxiliary was formed at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9568 at 39270 Huron River Drive in Romulus, just east of Hannan Road.
They meet the first Tuesday of each month and people interested may call the VFW Post at (734) 941-3030 for more information.
The auxiliary is open to men who had a dad or uncle or brother in the service and don’t qualify for VFW membership for those who served overseas.
Roxanne Deverich of Van Buren Township said the group is just getting started with its projects, but already has adopted a family to help members get back on their feet and holding dinners.
One of the biggest projects is the 18 lap robes that Deverich has made. They will be taking them to the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor for veterans to use. The auxiliary gets credit for such donations and so this will help the new group.
Deverich said her sister-in-law Kerry Vaughn of Romulus, made about 20 lap robes that she donated to Paralyzed Veterans. Vaughn’s friend, Evelyn Koueber of Romulus, made a large number of crocheted lap robes for Paralyzed Veterans. Neither belong to the auxiliary.
Deverich said her husband George and his sister Kerry had a brother, Mike Deverich, who was in the Navy and died in 1973 on the Kitty Hawk in an accident. She said Kerry puts a note in each of her lap robes for veterans telling about her brother and donating the robe in his memory.
Deverich said she was inspired by them to make lap robes, too, so last year and this year she made lap robes for the VA Hospital.
Deverich said Post 9568 had an auxiliary in the past, but hasn’t had one for several years.
Members of the newly formed auxiliary include Becky Brendtke, Debbie Allen, Roxanne Deverich, Dianne Lemanski, Carol Sam, Debbie Zielinski, President Sandi Merrow, Sr. Vice Barb Kaiser Miller, Lisa Koski, Jody Toner Williams, Virginia Silvey, Linda Alexander, Jr. Vice Toby Grudzinskas and, Chaplain Jamison Parker.
