Mark Thibert, 27, of Windsor, Ontario, is fighting for his life in the University of Michigan Burn Unit with burns over 80% of his body.
Michigan State Police identified Thibert as the driver of the semi truck that slammed into a parked steel hauler and burst into flame on I-94 in Van Buren Township June 8.
MSP also identified Michael Widmark, 39, of Munith as the Good Samaritan who saw Thibert engulfed in flames and stopped to help.
Widmark told police he grabbed T-shirts from his vehicle and ran after the burning Thibert, finally tackling him to get him down. He used the T-shirts to bat at the flames and took Widmark to the median where he rolled him in the grass to extinguish the fire, which he said was burning eight feet out from his body.
Thibert told Channel 2 News that he is a commercial printer in Taylor and got off his midnight shift early after a night of printing pizza flyers.
He told police he believes divine intervention put him there at the moment Thibert needed help.
Widmark is an Army veteran, but has no formal training in first aid.
