Man dies in two-car crash on Belleville Bridge

Kevin William Steffes, 44, of Ortonville was pronounced dead at a hospital following an accident on the Belleville Bridge at around 9:25 a.m. Monday.
Van Buren Township Police Sgt. Bart DeVos said police were investigating what happened, but preliminary reports from a witness and police show Steffes was southbound in a white Jeep when he veered over the center line and hit an Escape which was northbound.
The driver of the Escape, who tried to veer out of the way, did not have life-threatening injuries and was out walking around after the crash.
VBT fire fighters extricated Steffes from his vehicle. Alcohol consumption by the deceased driver is suspected to be the cause of the accident, but blood tests need to come from the medical examiner.
